ICC Womens World Cup 2009 - About the Event
The ICC Women's World Cup was staged in Sydney, Australia in March 2009 and was the first to be played under the auspices of the ICC since its merger with the International Women's Cricket Council (IWCC) in 2005.
England claimed the title with a thrilling four-wicket victory over a spirited New Zealand in the final in front of ESPN STAR Sports cameras at North Sydney Oval, Sydney. It is England’s third World Cup triumph but its first outside England following its victories in 1973 and 1993.
The other six teams which took part in the tournament include India, Australia, Sri Lanka, West Indies, South Africa and Pakistan.
South Africa and Pakistan qualified for the World Cup after reaching the final of the ICC Women's World Cup Qualifiers staged in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in March 2008.
The Women's World Cup has been running for longer than the men's version and was first staged in England in 1973, when it was won by the hosts, which beat Australia by 118 runs in the final at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The tournament has been staged twice each in England (1973 and 1993), India (1978 and 1997) , New Zealand (1982 and 2000) and Australia (1988 and 2009) as well as South Africa (2005).
